JUNIOR SHIELD CARNIVAL - ALL WINNERS, NO LOSERS   (posted 18 Jan '10)

Another successful VMCU Junior Carnival was completed yesterday (Sun 17 Jan '10) with all finals decided after two weeks of intensive competition between Melbourne metropolitan cricket's finest under-age representative teams.

The VMCU President (Kevin Noy) has asked that his congratulations be conveyed to all participants and thanks to volunteers for the ongoing success of this unique series -

"On behalf of the rest of the Board I extend our thanks and congratulations on the completion of another highly successful carnival.

This year we scheduled 215 matches, some unfortunately cancelled due to weather, and had over 950 players competing over the 2 weeks. As I have said before this is possibly more than some associations deal with over a whole season.

The standard of play we saw throughout the series and particularly in the finals, confirms that associations take great pride in their performance and that we are seeing players more than capable of playing in pathway squads and higher levels of cricket in the future. The way the carnival was conducted has certainly added to their cricket experience by playing against quality opposition on good grounds in matches controlled by experienced and supportive umpires. Comments coming back to me from many parents shows they are thrilled with the opportunity provided to their boys.

We can all take some pride in the stature this carnival has achieved in a relatively short number of years."

NEIL WRIGHT SHIELD FINAL - SUN 31 JAN '10   (posted 16 Jan '10)

The 2009/10 Neil Wright Shield will be decided between North Metro and Dandenog District CAs at Toorak Park on Sunday 31 Feb '10 from 11:00am.

Northern Metropolitan CA first made it to the grand-final in 1974/75 as Jika CA and took out the 'consolation prize' which was again theirs in 1977/78. Success eventually came as part of a combine effert with Preston in 1989/90 and again in 2007/08 when it was all theirs.

Dandenong District CA has won the Wright Shield six times with their first success in 1984/85 having shared the shield with City of Moorabbin CA in 1995/96. With a back-to-back win the following year and again in 2003/04 they will be all out to prove it can be habit-forming this season after their success in 2008/09. During the same period they have been runner-up on seven ocassions.

Make a day of it and come along to Toorak Park for the best under-21 cricket in Melbourne.

JUNIOR SHIELD CARNIVAL - THREAT OF EXCESSIVE HEAT   (posted 9 Jan '10)

As we approach week two of the 2009/10 junior carnival forecasts of excessive temperature threaten to disrupt some fixtures.  All participating teams are reminded that rule 10 provides for an early start and reduction in overs for days on which the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecasts a maximum temperature of 36C but less than 40C. This rule also requires that where the forecast is for a maximum of 40C or higher then all games are cancelled. At this stage particular attention should be paid to Monday morning's forecast (11 Jan '10). It should also be noted that the Match Committee has not scheduled a reserve day.

The relevant forecast is that issued by the BOM around 5:00am each day. There are only two such 'Daly' forecasts issued and the other is around 4:30pm, although additional updates are sometimes posted, so a visit to the website first thing in the morning to check is recommended. If our side-bar notice hasn't been updated for the day then simply go to the BOM website.

Neil Wright Shield - Variation to Fixtures/Finals   (posted 11 Dec '09)

Given the extremely unfortunate run of weather on game-days this season and the immanent threat of rain again for round-3 the VMCU board has announced the following changes to Wright Shield. These variations are made in an attempt, under trying circumstances, to produce meaningful ladders going into finals.

Tier-1:

Should round-3 achieve four results on 13 December, tier-1 will go into semi-finals and the final as scheduled on 10 and 31 January respectively. If less than four round-3 games achieve a result, those with no result will have their scores annulled and be replayed on 10 January.  Ladders will then be complied with the top 2 going on to play in a Final on 31 January.

However, if there are no results achieved in round-3 (13 Dec), round-1 will be replayed on 10 January and ladders compiled with the top 2 playing a final on 31 January. Any scores from round-3 games will stand and count towards percentages.

Tier 2:

If two or more results are achieved in round-3 (13 Dec) then tier-2 will play a final on 10 January. Any other  scenario on 13 December will see no further play in tier-2.There will be no promotion/relegation this season.
